In Defence of Serendipity
by Seb Olma

->>->>->>DOWNLOAD BOOK In Defence of Serendipity

In Defence of Serendipity is a lively and buccaneering work of investigative philosophy, treating the origins of 'serendipity, accident and sagacity' as both riddles and philosophical concepts that can be put to a future political use. Taking in Aristotle, LSD, Tony Blair and techno-mysticism, Olma challenges the prevailing faith in the benevolence of digital technology and the illegitimate equation of innovation and entrepreneurship, arguing instead that we must take responsibility for the care of society's digital infrastructure and prevent its degeneration into an apparatus of marketing and finance. For although there is nothing wrong with marketing and finance per se, if they alone lead technological development, free of any discretionary political interference, the freedom to be exploited will be as much a part of the future as our ability to intervene freely in our lives will be a thing of the past.

Universities such as the well cited Black Mountain college (whose students included John Cage & Buckminster Fuller) and co-working spaces originally provided much potential for chance encounters at little or no cost, and even the invention of cybernetics involved a degree of spontaneityRather than champion a Luddite perspective in relation to digital technology, Olma asks us to re-consider the effect tech culture has had on creative practices up to this pointHis defence of serendipity as a sagacity of resistance dedicated to an open future is made with a wit and lightness of spirit conspicuously absent in the lugubrious managerialist appropriations of the termThe hippy counter-culture movement and the communalists of the late 1960s were making a radical attempt to form an alternative social transformation and organise flexible communes and temporary networksWhile the global party press (TED, Wired, OReilly Media) runs hot churning out the credo of the innovation economy, the hiatus between the image of the world according to the digital innovation gospel and the real economic (and social) stasis grows to comical proportions SEBASTIAN OLMA Sebastian Olma is an Amsterdam-based author, critic, and sometime consultant with a critical view on creative industries policies

The naked silicon emperorAs part of his research for the book Olma co-organised a conference on creativity with the Institute of Network Cultures in 20141, where social scientist Pek van Andel2 provided an anecdotal sentence, which for Olma describes what is at stake in defending serendipity If this tendency towards platform capitalism goes unchecked, we will soon face a situation similar to that at the end of the Eastern BlocThe paradox is that while relying on informal and idiosyncratic forms of interpersonal exchange, cybernetics spawned a techno-social ontology, reducing human beings to increasingly calculable, controllable and predictable factors within systems (pg 160, 2016)He is also dean and chairman of the board of the Netherlands School for Public Administration 2ffeafca65
